advice...

I have been thinking of late that I need to get an art and craft box started for Master N - you know the type I mean one filled with egg cartons, cereal boxes, pipe cleaners, pom poms, string, sticky tape etc....

You would think that I would be in my element heading of to the $2 shop to fill a trolley full of supplies but I am perplexed to say that I don't really know where to start....

Considering I am not currently living in a mansion, I want to try and contain it to one of those plastic storage boxes - oh to be able to have an art and craft space like in the photo above...

So I am asking for you advice - what is a definite must have art and craft item that your kidlets have in their stash and love? Is there anything you can have too much of?

As a nanny to a busy little boy I could never have enough blue glue sticks - he was just obsessed! Blue glue on white paper, stick, repeat. Entertainment for hours.

I like the twistable crayons. We have packs of them!! They are hard for little fingers to snap and allow a lot of colour to be scribbled on a page quickly without any mess!!!!

Yes I was going to say twistable crayons but I can see Cate beat me to it :)
I'm not really up to the arts and craft stage as yet - can't wait though!

I filled a plastic storage box with 'crafty' items from the $2 shop & it's been a godsend :) Ella & I get it out at least once a week to make something. We do a lot of gluing...so collage pieces like scrap paper, cut outs, stickers, shapes, pom poms, sequins etc are always a must have in our box. I love the paints that are dry & you add water to get the colour to come out, they seem to be the easiest & cleanest :) I also bought chinese takeaway boxes to store each medium in....I blogged briefly about it here: http://www.scissorspaperrockdesigns.com.au/read-our-blog/2010/10/10/weekabooand-still-it-rains.html
ENJOY the crafting :)

We like the big chunky crayons - harder for little ones to break lol My kids are also huge fans of playdo, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners and stickers.

We recently had huge success with pasta pictures. I bought a selection of dried beans, pasta shapes, lentils etc and let the kids make pictures with them using pva nad sturdy cardstock. They had a fantastic time!

I bought a coffee table on ebay for $20 which has room for both kids and the trofast drawers from ikea as they fit heaps and are easy for kids to access.
Agree with above- lots of glue sticks, clag, a box of pictures cut out of magazines, a small one hole punch, string, ribbon, pipecleaners, small scissors, a pack of those felt pens that all join together, the fat twisty crayons, lots of sticky tape on small rolls and a container of stamps for stamping. Have a look at my blog entry for creation station cleanup recently and you will see it all in it's tidy state!

my girls love variety .. don't overstock, maybe just have a mixture of play doh .. paper, glue, scissors and your punchies, pencils etc .. if you overstock, i find that it all becomes overwhelming for them, and they will just make a big mess lol

looove that room!!
we love paint!! i've invested in those non spill pots that kind of have a funnel lid which never get put away.. they are a constant in the house. Chalk is fantastic too, we have a chalk board and the kids just love it!!

Have a look on my blog and search for kiddy art. That will give you a year full of our crafty adventures.

A variety of things that the girls have mentioned. Another good idea that we have done is bought a $2 plastic cutlery organiser (you know the ones with the four sections) I have Thick pencils, pencils, twisty crayons and lead pencils in there. The kids love it and they can carry it around the house or outside etc. It even comes camping with us. Oh to have a space like the photo:)
